As we wrap up another Holiday Season and dive head first into 2022, I want to remind everyone to be vigilant regarding the ever-increasing fraudulent activity that is becoming more prevalent, even impacting our credit union. Our Fraud Department works tirelessly with some of our own unsuspecting members that have fallen victim to scams. That’s why I want to take up this article reminding you about some that have already hit HFCU:

A caller pretends to be from the “Social Security Administration” or some other government agency and threatens to freeze your credit union account unless you purchase gift cards to avoid going to jail. Once purchased, they will ask that you provide them the numbers on the back of the gift cards as proof of purchase. This is always a scam. A legitimate government agency or reputable business would never ask for payment in the form of gift cards.

A “romantic love interest” sends you a check and asks you to deposit it and either withdraw the funds or wire the funds to their account. They may ask for all of the funds, or only a portion of them, and tell you to keep the extra for “doing them a favor”. Depositing a scammer’s check, being a “money mule”, puts you in serious legal and financial jeopardy. The check will always come back as counterfeit and you will be responsible for repaying the withdrawn funds, while the scammer gets away.

Law enforcement and financial institutions continue to work on being one step ahead of the criminals, but we need your help. Please be cautious whenever you hear of a deal that sounds too good to be true, it almost always is. Our team has been trained to ask you questions regarding large deposits or withdrawals in order to help you safeguard your hard-earned money. So, please be patient with them, as they are only trying to protect your accounts.

In addition, help us help you by adhering to a few simple rules:

Do not open any suspicious or unexpected emails, links, or attachments

Do not openly share or provide any personal information, including your eBranch password

Be suspicious of anything that requires an “urgent” or “immediate” response. These are usually scams

Be suspicious of something that seems “too good to be true” ie: receiving extra money or free money

To learn more about these scams or others please visit the State of Vermont’s website: https://dfr.vermont.gov/consumers/avoid-scams-and-frauds. If you think you are being targeted or have fallen victim to any one of these scams, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We have processes in place that can help protect any further information from being stolen, and we are always happy to help keep you from becoming a victim!
