President's Message

I can say without a doubt that 2019 was definitely a busy year and one of change around Heritage Family Credit Union.  The changes that occurred revolved mostly around technological enhancements, which included a new digital banking solution, improved features for our debit/credit cards and upgraded ATM processing.  All of these new systems/processes were necessary to ensure that HFCU would remain relevant to our members for years to come.

An image of Matt Levandowski, HFCU President/CEOUnfortunately, while this was the correct decision for the future success of HFCU, a few of these upgrades created some unanticipated challenges for our members and for that I want to apologize.  Removing the old legacy systems and incorporating all of this new technology proved to be a little more daunting than originally expected.  However, the end result of these changes will ultimately allow our members to utilize some of the most up-to-date self-service, fraud and data prevention features of any cards and digital banking services on the market today.

I appreciate your patience and assistance in working with us to get through some of the bumps in the road.  In the near future you will see many new features being rolled out, including temporarily turning your cards off if you misplace them, requesting a new card, setting your cards for your travel and activating your cards all from your smartphone.  Also, in the second quarter, we will be rolling out an all-new “business” eBranch, specifically designed for the special needs of our business members.

Your membership and the use of our products is important to the continued success of HFCU and we will continue to work on these new solutions to create the best possible experience for our members.

I hope you had a great holiday season and wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous 2020.

Matt Levandowski

Federal Reserve Seal
Financial Feature: THE FEDERAL RESERVE

The central bank of the U.S. is charged by Congress with maintaining economic and financial stability. The fed funds rate is the interest rate financial institutions charge each other to lend Federal Reserve funds overnight, but it's also a tool the nation's central bank, known as the Fed, uses to control U.S. economic growth and a benchmark for interest rates on credit cards, mortgages, loans, and more.

The logic goes like this: When the economy slows – or merely even looks like it could – the Fed may choose to lower interest rates. This action incentivizes businesses to invest and hire more, and it encourages consumers to spend more freely, helping to propel growth. On the contrary, when the economy looks like it may be growing too fast, the Fed may decide to hike rates, causing employers and consumers to tap the brakes on their financial decisions.

The Fed’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meets eight times a year to review economic indicators including durable goods report, and unemployment rates.

How does it affect you, the member?

Some credit card and loans have a variable interest rate that is based off the Fed funds rate. If that rate goes up, you may pay more to use your credit.

Share Savings, Money Market and Certificate of Deposits may be impacted by the Fed rate, typically fluctuating in alignment with the rising or decreasing rate as the credit union return on funds is impacted.

Stock returns are often tied to the Fed funds rate and the return on your investment can be impacted by fluctuations in the rate.
